Fly / Coach

More about the Piopiotahi Marine Reserve

Established in 1993, the Reserve (Piopiotahi means “one native thrush” and was named after the extinct piopio bird) is renowned for its diverse underwater life, making it a top destination for diving enthusiasts.

The protected reserve is 16km long and covers 690 hectares, with a mix of deep fiord basins and rocky shorelines stretching along the northern side of the fiord from Milford village to Dale Point at the Tasman Sea. It’s home to a unique underwater ecosystem with black corals and delicate invertebrates attached to steep rock walls, as well as vibrant schools of fish, rock lobsters, dolphins and seals.

Walk

Short walks

There are several short/day walks in and around Fiordland National Park and on the way to Piopiotahi Milford Sound which are perfect for soaking up the stunning scenery. Visit the DOC website for more details.

Milford Track multi-day hike

Featuring lush rainforests, alpine meadows, towering mountains and stunning waterfalls, including the iconic Sutherland Falls, the Milford Track is one of New Zealand’s 10 Great Walks.

The 53km (one-way) track can be hiked independently or via a guided walk package.  The guided walk is a fantastic option for visitors which takes care of all the logistics, adds an extra layer of comfort and safety, and provides an opportunity to learn from knowledgeable guides and mix with others in your group.

Visitor Terminal

Day and overnight boat cruises of this stunning fiord depart from the Piopiotahi Milford Sound Visitor Terminal. Coach arrivals are dropped off at the entrance to the Terminal, whilst the car park is at least a 15-minute walk away.

The terminal includes amenities such as restrooms, parking, and information services.

It’s a great spot to get maps and details about local attractions.  The knowledgeable local guides and reservation teams can provide insights on hiking trails, weather conditions, and other activities, helping you make the most of your visit.

Food and drink options are limited in Piopiotahi Milford Sound. The main ones include:

This café near the visitor centre offers a selection of meals, including sandwiches, salads, and hot dishes. It’s a great spot to refuel before or after your adventures.

Many boat cruises provide meals or snacks on board, ranging from light refreshments to buffet-style lunches. Check carefully what is available on your cruise as some require prebooking.

Some visitors choose to bring their own food and drinks. There are beautiful picnic areas where you can enjoy your packed meal with stunning views.
